Shinkafi Local Government Area is located in Zamfara North Senatorial District, with its headquarters in the town of Shinkafi . Towns and villages that make up Shinkafi LGA include Miyasa, Shinkafi, Bwane, Tunga, Fidani, Tubali, and Faru. Covering an area of 921.5 km², it had a population of 135,964 according to the 2006 census, projected to reach 241,900 in 2022, with a density of 262.5 people per km². It shares borders with Isa Local Government Area in Sokoto State and Niger Republic to the north, Zurmi Local Government Area to the south and southeast, and Maradun Local Government Area and Raba Local Government Area in Sokoto State to the west. Farming is a major economic activity engaged in by the people of Shinkafi LGA with the area known for the massive cultivation of Tobacco. The LGA hosts the Nigerian and the Philip Morris Tobacco companies.  Other important economic activities undertaken by the people of Shinkafi LGA include hunting, trade, animal rearing, and leather works.
