Kurmi Local Government Area (LGA),
headquartered in Ba'issa, is located in Taraba Central Senatorial District.
Created in 1996, it has an area of 4,487 square kilometres. With a population
of 91,282 (2006 census), projected to be 143,600 by 2022, with a density of 74
people per square kilometres.The economy is sustained by timber, cocoa farming,
and ecotourism, thanks to its dense forests and waterfalls like the Mayo Selbe
Falls. Kurmi local government Area lies on the south border with Cameroon and
these areas are richly blessed with fertile soil which grows a number of cash
crops and food crops such as Bananas, Plantains, Rice, Groundnuts, Oranges,
Palm trees, Cocoyam and Cocoa. Others include Maize, Guinea corn and Sesame.
Kurmi is also a producer of high quality Timber and the only Local Government
with the state owned abandoned Timber Company which was called Baissa Timber
Development Corporation.
