Ikot Ekpene LGA, Akwa Ibom State

Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, also known as "The Raffia City," is a historic hub located in the South-South region of Nigeria. Found at coordinates 5°11′N 7°43′E, it is widely regarded as a cultural and commercial center in Akwa Ibom State. The LGA is inhabited primarily by the Annang people, alongside a small number of Igbo traders and Hausa vendors. It is in the Akwa Ibom North-West senatorial district. The population of Ikot Ekpene grew from 141,408 in 2006 to an estimated 180,500 in 2022. Covering 160.9 km², the population density is 1,122 people per km². Ikot Ekpene is a chief trade center for agricultural products, including yams, cassava, taro, corn, and palm produce. The LGA is also renowned for its raffia-based arts and crafts, with exports such as raffia cane furniture, baskets, sculptures, and cloths. These crafts contribute significantly to the economy alongside agriculture. The area houses prominent institutions like Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ritman University, St. Joseph Major Theological Seminary, and the School of Nursing. Additionally, the first experimental local government in British West Africa was established here, cementing its historic significance .
