Lagos Mainland Local Government Area (LGA) lies in the Lagos Central Senatorial District, with its headquarters in Ebute Metta. The area has a population of 483,600 (2022 projection), up from 326,700 in 2006, and spans 20.18 square kilometres, resulting in a population density of 23,963 people per square kilometre[1]. Its geographic coordinates are approximately 6°30′N latitude and 3°22′E longitude.
Established in 1977 following reforms by the Federal Government, Lagos Mainland is the oldest local government in Lagos State[2]. The LGA is a blend of historic rural economic activities and modern industries. Earlier settlers relied heavily on fishing, especially in areas like Makoko, as well as hunting, farming, and craftwork. However, urbanization has introduced sectors such as banking, oil and gas, and housing, alongside the continued vibrancy of local trade, particularly at the renowned Tejuosho Market[3].
The area hosts major educational institutions, including the University of Lagos, Yaba College of Technology, and the Federal Science and Technology College, as well as notable landmarks such as the National Stadium and the Lagos City Mall[4]. The postal code for Lagos Mainland is 101212.
