Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA) is situated in the Lagos East Senatorial District, covering an expansive area of 411.3 square kilometres. With a 2006 population of 527,917, the LGA's population was projected to reach 781,500 by 2022, resulting in a density of approximately 1,900 people per square kilometre[1]. The region's coordinates are 6°36′N latitude and 3°30′E longitude[2].
Ikorodu stands out as Nigeria's 12th largest city and is experiencing rapid growth at a rate of 5.26% annually, with projections estimating its population to reach 1.7 million by 2035. The area has become a hub of economic activity, particularly in agriculture and energy.
The Imota Rice Mill, inaugurated in 2023, is a centrepiece of Ikorodu’s economy. Spanning 22 hectares, it is Africa’s largest rice mill and the third-largest globally, producing 2.8 million 50kg bags of rice annually and creating 1,500 direct and 254,000 indirect jobs[3]. The Egbin Power Plant, located in Ijede, is Nigeria’s largest power station with a capacity of 1,320 MW, reinforcing Ikorodu’s critical role in energy production[4].
Educational institutions in Ikorodu include Caleb University, the first private university in Lagos, and the Lagos State University of Science and Technology. Additionally, the LGA hosts significant landmarks such as the Ikorodu Lighter Port Terminal and the Odoro Stream and Beach. These elements make Ikorodu a key player in Lagos State's economic and infrastructural landscape[5].
