Edu L.G.A Of KWARA State

Edu Local Government Area (LGA), predominantly a Nupe-speaking region, is situated in Kwara North Senatorial District, with its headquarters in Lafiagi. Created in 1976, Edu LGA shares boundaries with Ifelodun in the South, Pategi in the East, and in the North by River Niger and Niger State respectively. The LGA encompasses towns such as Lafiagi, Tsaragi, and Tshonga, Bacita, Zambufu, Yikpata, Edogi, Puta, Gbugbu, Lema, Kodokodo, Kpandaragi, Patidzuru, and Ogudu [1]. Covering 2,455 km², Edu had a 2006 population of 201,642, projected to grow to 302,700 by 2022, resulting in a population density of 123.3/km² [2]. Agriculture forms the economic backbone of the LGA, with the cultivation of cotton, soybeans, rice, millet, sugarcane, melon, cassava, yam and guinea corn being prominent. Mineral resources such as Granite, Silica, Tantalite, Oolitic and Gypsum also occur in large deposits within the area[3]. Other significant economic activities include blacksmithing and textile weaving[4]. Its major festivals are Ndakogboya masquerade festival and the Gugu -Eyagi masquerade festival. Popular tourist attractions include the Monko Tauheed Tomb at Eson Tauheed near Lafiagi, Edozi Dukun, the Pottery Center near Lafiagi, the Pat-Ora Sacred Caveat, Tsaragi, Kpatako Spring Water near Tsonga, and the Tsoede Brinze Tada near Tsonga[5].
