Ajaokuta local government areawith its headquarters located in the town of Egayin situated in Kogi Central Senatorial District and consists of towns and villages such as Agarugu, Ebiya, Epiri, Achagana, Idire, Ohunene, and Shagana. The dominant ethnic affiliations in Ajaokuta include the Ogori, the Ebira and the Igala. Covering an area of 1,347 km², Ajaokuta LGA had a population of 122,432 in 2006, which was projected to rise to 165,000 by 2022, resulting in a population density of 122.5/km²[1] Ajaokuta is popular for the cultivation of crops such as yam, rice, millet and cocoyam with trade also being a viable economic engagement for the area’s dwellers. The area has a large number of markets with the New market being the most patronized in the local government area. Ajaokuta LGA also has the presence of Nigeria's largest steel producing industry; the Ajaokuta steel company. The steelworks have been called the "bedrock of Nigeria’s industrialization". However, the project has been mismanaged, and the steel mill has not produced a single sheet of steel as of December 2017[2].
