Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area (LGA), situated along the Sokoto River, is the capital city of Kebbi State and the Administrative headquarters of the Gwandu Emirate. The LGA's population was 268,620 in 2006. The projected population for 2022 is 458,900. The LGA covers an area of 1,037 square kilometers, resulting in a population density of 442.7 people per square kilometer (based on the 2022 projection).Until the seat of power was relocated to Argungu in 1831, this Fulani-majority city served as the capital of the Kebbi Emirate. In 1991, Birnin Kebbi assumed its current role as the capital of the newly established Kebbi State.
