Essien Udim Local Government Area, created in 1989 from the former Akwa Ibom North-West (Ikot Ekpene) division, has its headquarters in Afaha Ikot Ebak. The LGA lies at coordinates 5°08′0″N 7°41′0″E and falls within the Ikot Ekpene senatorial district. The 2006 census recorded a population of 193,257, which is projected to reach 246,600 by 2022. The region is rich in crude oil and natural gas, attracting both local and international oil companies. Agriculture plays a major role in the economy, with crops such as citrus, oil palm, cassava, and maize widely cultivated. Essien Udim is the hometown of Chief Dr. Godswill Obot Akpabio, former governor and current president of the Senate, adding to its political prominence.
