Funtua, a Local Government Area (LGA) in Katsina State, Nigeria, is headquartered in the town of Funtua, situated along the A126 highway. The LGA's population was recorded at 225,156 in the 2006 census, with projections for 2022 indicating a significant increase to 402,400. Covering an area of 384.1 square kilometers, Funtua's population density is estimated at 1,048 inhabitants per square kilometer as of 2022. The region has experienced a substantial annual population growth rate of 3.7% between 2006 and 2022. Established in 1976 following local government reforms, Funtua is recognized as one of Nigeria's prominent LGAs. The town serves as the administrative center for the Katsina South Senatorial District, encompassing eleven local government areas: Bakori, Danja, Dandume, Faskari, Sabuwa, Kankara, Malumfashi, Kafur, Musawa, Matazu, and Funtua itself.Funtua boasts several higher education institutions that attract students from across the nation. Notably, Ahmadu Bello University's School of Basic and Remedial Studies (SBRS) in Funtua caters to students from all nineteen northern states of Nigeria. The LGA also offers healthcare education through three prominent institutions: the Muslim Community College of Health Science & Technology Funtua, the College of Health and Environmental Sciences Funtua, and the Community School of Health Sciences and Technology Funtua Annex. Funtua's industrial prominence stems from its colonial-era roots. Its diverse economy includes a strong textile industry (Funtua Textiles Limited, West African Cotton Company, Lumus Cotton Ginnery), a thriving agriculture and food processing sector (Jargaba Agric Processing Company, Northern Diaries, Integrated Flour Mills, Salama Rice Mills), and manufacturing companies (Funtua Burnt Bricks, Funtua Fertilizer Blending Company).
