Eket LGA, Akwa Ibom State

Eket Local Government Area is an industrial hub and one of the local governments in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in Eket town, which has grown into a conurbation of merged villages. The area lies at 4°39′N 7°56′E, with its landscape marked by abundant rivers and the Qua Iboe River, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The 2006 population of 172,856 is projected to have risen to 220,600 by 2022, with a land area of 209.7 square kilometers and a population density of 1,052 people per square kilometre. Eket’s economy thrives on oil production, with Mobil Producing Nigeria playing a central role since the 1970s. The presence of several service companies supporting oil operations has significantly boosted the local economy. The LGA is also noted for farming activities, producing cassava, plantains, vegetables, and yams, alongside fishing, which is integral to the region's traditional economy. However, challenges such as over-farming and environmental concerns from oil exploitation persist. Key landmarks in Eket include the Mobil Airstrip, Qua Iboe River Bridge, Esuene Square, and part of the Stubbs Creek Forest Reserve. Infrastructure development, including roads, housing estates, and markets, continues to expand, supported by both public and private investments .
