Abak Local Government Area is located in Akwa Ibom State within the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District. Its headquarters is in Abak Town. Abak, as a local government, is situated at coordinates 4°59′N 7°47′E. Historically, Abak was part of Cross River State and later divided into other LGAs like Oruk Anam, Etim Ekpo, Ukanafun, and Ika. It comprises five clans: Abak Urban, Afaha Obong, Ediene, Midim, and Otoro. Abak became a local government in 1976. The 2006 population of 139,069 is projected to grow to 177,500 by 2022, with a land area of 167 square kilometers and a population density of 1,063 people per square kilometre .Abak is notable for its palm oil and kernel production, historically exported through the river ports at Ntak Ibesit and Ikot Okoro. Agricultural activities include the cultivation of cassava, maize, yam, plantain, vegetables, and oil palm, as well as livestock farming. Additionally, Abak is rich in mineral resources, including sand, gravel, clay, salt, and crude oil.Key landmarks include the Ime Umana Campus of the University of Uyo in Ediene Abak, which hosts pre-degree and JUPEB programs. The LGA is also known for its fertile rainforest ecosystem, supporting a variety of agricultural ventures.
