Ado Ekiti L.G.A Of EKITI State

Ado Ekiti Local Government Area (LGA), situated in southwest Nigeria, serves as the capital city of Ekiti State and headquarters for the Ekiti Central Senatorial District[1]. Originally carved out of the former Ekiti Central LGA by the Babangida administration in May 1989[2], Ado Ekiti is home to a predominantly Ekiti Yoruba population, renowned for its rich cultural heritage.

With an area of 277.8 square kilometres, the LGA had a population of 313,690 in 2006, projected to reach around 469,700 by 2022, resulting in a population density of approximately 1,691 people per square kilometre[3]. The city's coordinates are approximately 7.6211° N latitude and 5.2214° E longitude[4] and its postal code is 360[5].

Ado Ekiti's economy is diverse, with a strong foundation in textile manufacturing. Since 1967, the LGA has hosted a large textile mill, reflecting its deep-rooted cotton weaving tradition. Additionally, the area produces artisanal goods, including shoes and pottery, and serves as a trading hub for cash crops like cocoa and timber[6].

Ado Ekiti is a significant educational centre, home to several higher institutions. These include the Ekiti State University (formerly the University of Ado Ekiti), Afe Babalola University, the Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, and Crown Polytechnic[7]. Tourist attractions in Ado Ekiti boast cultural and historical attractions, such as the ancient Ewi’s Palace, a symbol of traditional governance and heritage, and the Fajuyi Memorial Park, a tribute to the region’s historical leaders[8].
