Ishielu Local Government Area, established in 1989 under the military administration of General Ibrahim B. Babangida[1], is located in the Ebonyi Central Senatorial District with its headquarters in Ezillo[2]. The LGA is made up of a number of towns and villages such as Umuakpu, Amalaeze, Azunyaba, Onuoji, Nkalaha, Amaokwe, Nkalagu, Iyonu, and Ntezi[3]. Covering 725.3 km², it had a population of 152,581 in 2006, projected to reach 227,300 by 2022, with a density of 313.4 people per km²[4]. Farming is a major economic activity undertaken by the people of Ishielu LGA with a number of crops such as rice, yam, and cassava grown in the area. The area has a number of mineral deposits such as salt and limestone with Ishielu LGA being a hub for the industrial production of cement[5]. Trade also flourishes in Ishielu LGA with the area playing host to several markets such as the Ezillo and the Nwafor Ehioji markets.
