Afikpo North Local Government Area, established in 1996, is situated in Ehugbo, Afikpo, within the Ebonyi South Senatorial District of Ebonyi State, Nigeria[1]. It consists of towns and villages which include Itim, Unwana, Ozizza, Amasiri, Nkpoghoro and Ugwuegu[2]. Covering 269.9 km², it had a population of 156,649 in 2006, projected to grow to 233,300 by 2022, with a density of 864.4 people per km²[3]. Mainly farmers and traders, Afikpo North LGA is considered a major producer of agricultural products in Nigeria. These include yam, palm produce, maize, groundnut, plantain, banana, cassava, fruits and vegetables[4]. Significant institutions include Mater Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing and Midwifery and Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana[5].
