The majority of the people speak Ejagham and Iyong Iyong languages. Akamkpa has the largest forest area in the State and Akamkpa Local Government Area is situated in Cross River State with headquarters in Akamkpa town created in 1976. It is under the Cross River South senatorial district and had a population of 149,705 people in 2006 and is projected to reach 228,000 in 2022. Akamkpa Local government area has a population density of 49 people per kilometer square and covers approximately 4003km2.
