Yenagoa Local Government Area serves as both a local government and the capital city of Bayelsa State, situated in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Its administrative headquarters is in Yenagoa Town, located at 4°55′29″N 6°15′51″E. It is part of the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District.
Yenagoa had a population of 352,285 in 2006, which is projected to rise to 524,400 by 2022. The LGA spans 706.7 square kilometres and has a population density of 742.0 people per square kilometre .
Historically, Yenagoa is home to the Ijo people, who transitioned from slave trading to palm oil and kernel exports following the abolition of slavery. Fishing and agriculture remain integral to the economy, while petroleum and natural gas exploitation has spurred economic diversification .
The area is known for Bayelsa Airport, Bayelsa United Football Club, and Bayelsa Queens Football Club .
