Southern Ijaw Local Government Area is situated in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, with its administrative headquarters in Oporoma (also known as Osokoma), located at 4°48′17″N 6°04′44″E. The LGA is part of the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District and is predominantly inhabited by the Izon-speaking people.
Southern Ijaw had a population of 321,808 in 2006, which is projected to reach 479,000 by 2022. It spans 2,705 square kilometres, resulting in a population density of 177.1 people per square kilometre .
The local economy is largely driven by fishing, leveraging the area’s extensive river network. Farming is also prominent, with crops like cassava, sugarcane, plantain, and banana cultivated. Other economic activities include snail gathering, lumbering, and the production of canoes and fishing nets. Rich deposits of crude oil and natural gas further bolster the area’s economic significance.
Landmarks include Niger Delta University, the Federal Polytechnic in Ekowe, and Bayelsa State Airport located on Wilberforce Island.
